History - The city founded by the Portuguese in 1537, remained Portuguese until the independence of Brazil, except for a period of Dutch occupation in the XVII century, between 1630 and 1654. The population was composed of sailors, shippers and fishermen, they lived in houses made of straw at the far south of the peninsula. It was from a small port that the city that was growing, until become the capital of Pernambuco, transforming the export of sugar to Europe in one of the most profitable businesses of the time.

The Dutches arrived in 1630 transforming the village into a shopping center, mixing the movement of goods due to the presence of the port and the Jews, traders by excellence. With the fire caused by the Dutches in 1631 to destroy Olinda, Recife was gaining status of the city and became the capital of Pernambuco in 1827. The anniversary of the city is celebrated on March 12.
